Working Paper | Mitigation Work: A Case Study for Tracking Continuities of Eugenics in the Modern Criminal Legal System

Tara Bhat ‘25 (she/her) is a student interested in the histories of eugenics at Yale, abolition, and mitigation work. This is a working paper that describes a brief history of eugenics’ connections to the study of “criminality” and how those legacies live on today within the seemingly anti-eugenic practice of mitigation work in criminal defense.
